Axis Engineering Ltd.

Founded in 2020, Axis Engineering as a company has been around for three years, but our core values, design principles, and exceptional customer service is backed by nearly 25 years of industry experience. We have the know-how and capability to solve challenging problems, with the freshness and enthusiasm to do so with innovative methods and technology. Acknowledging that we are dependent on the customer, and not the other way around, Axis Engineering uses a client-centered approach while maintaining the highest standards of safety, compliance, and simplicity in our designs.

More AboutAxis Engineering Ltd.

Axis Engineering Ltd. offers a wide variety of services for mining, industrial, and commercial clients. With a client-centered approach, we take pride in providing simple solutions to challenging problems with a focus on the following areas:

Fall Protection Engineering & Design

Axis Engineering is one of the leading consultants in Western Canada when it comes to fall protection engineering. Our Fall Protection Lead, Brad Frehlich, currently maintains a leadership role on the CSA Z259 technical committee, helping to steer the development of Canadian fall protection standards. We are, therefore, able to design systems that comply with the latest Canadian standards. We can also assist the owner with procurement through our network of suppliers and installers throughout Western Canada. In a consulting role, we represent the owner, not any one supplier or installer.

1. System Design & Consulting

We provide design and engineering services for fall protection and suspended access systems including horizontal lifelines, rigid rail systems, roof anchors, ladder systems, guardrail, and custom portable systems. Our thorough understanding of the physics at play during a fall allow us to accurately analyze even the most complex systems. We take pride in providing user-friendly and budget-friendly solutions for our clients.

2. Hazard Assessment

We provide hazard assessments to help owners and facility managers identify and prioritize fall hazards. We understand that owners and facility managers often have limited budgets and hazard assessments are critical to ensure that the budget is being allocated efficiently.

3. Inspection Services

We provide inspection services for fall protection systems as well as personal fall protection equipment. Our expertise and thoroughness give our clients peace of mind that their systems and equipment are in good condition and will function properly if called upon to save the life of a falling worker.

Mechanical Engineering & Design

Our team of mechanical engineers and designers specialize in material handling, machine and equipment design, transfer chutes, and product storage bins. Our team has decades of hands-on experience in the mining and industrial sectors. Our design team uses state-of-the-art CAD, FEA, and DEM software. This combination of real-world experience and technology allows us to maintain the highest standards of safety, compliance, and simplicity in our designs.

1. Material Handling

  • Design, specification, and modification of belt, drag, and screw conveyors, as well as bucket elevators.
  • Performance specifications and general layout drawings to support a vendor design supply package.
  • Detailed design package for a system based on the project performance criteria, incorporating site standard components, and taking into consideration site preferences regarding access and maintenance.
  • System evaluations necessary to increase capacity which may include drive modifications, component replacement, or complete drive replacement.

2. Ore & Product Storage Bins

  • Inspection, evaluation, and design of product and ore storage bins.
  • Eurocode and FEA evaluation using existing bin wall thicknesses to determine critical areas for repair or replacement.
  • Integration of redundant hopper supports to reduce the risk of catastrophic failure of the hopper.
  • Material loading evaluation, analysis and design of the bin to Eurocode standards, and selection of materials based on flow characteristics, corrosion mitigation, and cost.
  • Review the integration of chutes, feeders, diverters, gates, etc. into the design of the bin as a system.

3. Machine & Equipment Design

  • Design custom pieces of equipment based on client requirements starting at concept development and progressing to detailed fabrication drawings and components specification.
  • Our experience includes hydraulic, pneumatic, and/or electric powered equipment with direct, belt, or chain drives incorporating custom equipment guarding that meet industry requirements and include site specific maintenance requirements and standards.

4. Transfer Chutes

The team at Axis Engineering specializes in the design of custom transfer chutes and loading zones that:

  • reduce dust generation
  • reduce chute wear
  • improving product loading
  • reduce belt tracking issues
  • reduce spillage, and
  • reduced skirting rubber maintenance.

5. Discrete Element Modeling (DEM)

The team at Axis Engineering has many years of experience using DEM software to simulate bulk material flow as an integral process in the successful design of many custom transfer chutes. Using DEM to design a transfer chute that performs well requires experience and an in-depth understanding of the mechanics of bulk material flow, the specific causes of dust generation, material degradation, and chute wear.

6. Lifting & Rigging

Our lead engineers have nearly 10 years of experience with lifting/rigging projects. From monorails to below-the-hook lifting devices, we can help with your heaviest lifting needs. Some examples of items we can design include monorails, material baskets, jib cranes, mine hoist attachments, davit arms, spreader bars/beams, and most lifting devices covered under the ASME B30 and BTH-1 standards.

Structural Engineering & Design

With large companies increasingly focused on major, often long-term, capital projects, Axis Engineering can tackle small structural projects quickly and efficiently. We currently focus on access platforms, equipment support, and infill steel.

1. Platform Design

Our structural team specializes in designing access platforms, industrial floor steel upgrades, equipment supports, and custom mine shaft access equipment (such as stage platforms and emergency egress cages). Axis Engineering is committed to working with clients to ensure safe, compliant designs that work for all stakeholders.

2. Connection Design

Axis Engineering can provide connection design, shop drawing review, and sealing services. For many projects, the fabricator is responsible for designing the connections between members and ensuring that these connections comply with applicable codes and standards. Axis Engineering can work with fabrication shops to provide economical connection designs that not only meet the design intent and project specifications, but also fit within the fabricator’s budget.

Inspection Services

We pride ourselves on ensuring the safety and longevity of your assets. With a focus on asset integrity inspections for mine sites and fall protection inspections for industrial and commercial facilities, our team is dedicated to providing thorough inspection services with practical and actionable recommendations.

1. Fall Protection Inspection

According to CCOHS guidelines, every piece of a fall protection systems needs to be inspected and certified at least annually, if not more often. Axis Engineering can inspect and certify your fall protection systems for assured safety and peace of mind.

2. Asset Integrity

At Axis Engineering, asset integrity services extend beyond standard structural inspections. The team can provide essential engineering expertise for effective problem-solving in response to inspection findings. Clients can receive guidance on the most suitable approaches to address integrity concerns, whether that involves structural repairs, replacements, temporary shoring, or combinations thereof. This comprehensive strategy revitalizes deteriorated structures and prolongs their service life, ensuring long-lasting, dependable assets.
